RADD is going on indefinite hiatus

Effective immediately, the RADD service is on indefinite hiatus. This means:

  • no additional digitization or data-rescue projects will be accepted (though in-house ones will be completed)
  • no support or training is available for RADD equipment
  • the main RADD space in the iSchool Library is not available for public or campus use (exception noted below)
  • no equipment donations can be accepted

When the iSchool Library reopens, however, the workstation known as “RADD II” will be back in service. It handles the following formats (not to archival standards):

  • standard audiocassettes
  • VHS tapes
  • Mini-DV tapes

No support will be available for RADD II beyond existing documentation; it is a use-at-your-own-risk service.

I appreciate the interest and support from the campus and Madison communities over the years RADD has been in operation. The reason for this decision is that I am dissatisfied with the level of service I have been able to provide, and cannot at present see any feasible road to improving it. If this changes, I am open to reopening the service.

My thanks to all who have inspired or been involved with RADD. It’s been a journey!
